How to clean a coffee maker

Before attempting to clean your coffee maker, first ensure it is switched off and disconnected from the mains, and has cooled down from previous use.

1. Remove all the removable parts , such as the filter basket and the pot.

2. I use a damp cloth to clean the sides, the lid including the underside, and the heating element as well. Maybe just giving the heating element a wipe, to see if anything will come off, else leave it alone.

3. Squeeze the juice of a lemon, and part fill the coffee maker with cold water, with the basket replaced back in the pot for cleaning as well. Best put something under the coffee pot while you run the cleaning process, just in case any liquid spills out.

Lemon juice and boiling water becomes frothy and rises up to the top when you heat it up, and sometimes it comes out of the coffee maker. So its best to allow for that happening so if it does. it won't make a mess.

4. Run the mixture through the coffee maker, then leave for fifteen minutes to cool. Run it through again, and leave for another fifteen minutes. Run it through one more time, and after fifteen minutes, pour the solution away, and rinse well with cold water.

I live in a hard water area, hence the need to repeat the cycle three times, which is due to the build up of limescale inside the coffee maker.

If you live in a soft water area, the limescale won't build up so readily.

You should clean your coffee maker every month or so, depending how often you use it..
